New Hampshire

The biggest surprise of our trip was the state of New Hampshire.  I had done so much research on all of the other places on our road trip, but because we were going to see family in New Hampshire, I didn't spend much time planning out our time here.  New Hampshire turned out to be the most beautiful state and we enjoyed our adventures here so much!  The first thing we did when we got into Holderness is to head out on Squam lake with our family.  Squam Lake is known for being the filming location for the 1981 Academy Award winning film "On Golden Pond".

The lake was the perfect way to spend the afternoon.  The water was beautiful!

We saw our first covered bridge as while we were on the boat!

The kids enjoyed some rock jumping!

The water was so smooth to paddleboard on.

We headed to our bed and breakfast after we left the lake.

The kids had never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast before, so it was a whole new experience for them.  The Nutmeg Inn had the sweetest inn keepers and the most beautiful grounds.

Each morning they fixed the most delicious breakfast that we got to enjoy out on the deck.

I really want to go back to New Hampshire during the fall foliage!  I can't imagine how beautiful it would be!

We really weren't sure how to spend our last day of vacation.  The weather didn't look the best, but we decided to just hit the road and start exploring.  Our first stop was Castle in the Clouds.  Castle in the Clouds is the country estate of Tom Plant who earned his fortune in the shoe industry.  This 6,300 acre property has the most stunning views and it was very interesting to tour the house.

They had some great walking trails around the property and there was plenty of space to have a picnic.  This day of the vacation was the wrong day for the kids to wear their birkenstocks.

After we left Castle on the Clouds we headed toward Vermont.  Brody wanted to mark that state off the list while we were so close.  On our way there I saw a sign for Flume Gorge.  I looked it up on my phone and it looked amazing.  After obtaining tickets online we were quickly on our way to explore the park.

The trail was a mix of pavement and wooden stairs.  The scenery was breathtaking.  The kids were troopers walking so much in their sandals!

It never got old seeing covered bridges!

After a quick drive into Vermont we stopped at Littleton, New Hampshire.  We ate at the Littleton Diner.  This diner has been a very popular stop for visiting politicians throughout the years.  The food was traditional diner food and it was delicious.

That night we returned to our bed and breakfast and were greeted with no electricity.  Some storms had knocked out the power and we ended up not having electricity for the rest of the evening and into the morning.  We decided to leave early and head to the airport in Manchester so we could charge electronics and enjoy electricity.  The Northeast stole my heart during our time there and I can't wait to go back!
