Ogunquit Maine

After leaving Boston, we headed north to Maine. It was a very quick and easy trip to our destination of Ogunquit. Ogunquit came highly recommend by my step mother-in-law who grew up in Maine. It turned out to be one of my favorite places I have ever visited. This quaint beach town is somewhere I could see bringing my family back to year after year. The beaches were beautiful, the people were friendly and welcoming, and the food was delicious.

Hotels here are not the same type of massive resorts I’ve become accustomed on the Gulf. Hotels are much smaller and have a very retro feel to them. We stayed at The Milestone and it was perfect for us. The Milestone is on the main strip that runs through town. There are hotels and restaurants that line this street. I loved that the hotel was a 3 minute drive to the beach (with a huge parking lot) and about a 10 minute drive downtown.  There was an old-school feel to it that reminded me of the hotels I stayed at with my grandparents when I was little, but it was clean, comfortable, and the kids loved the outdoor pool.  Normally there is a trolley that runs up and down the strip, but due to Covid, it wasn’t running.

We were starving by the time we rolled into town, so we stopped at one of the first places we saw. It turned out to be one of my favorite meals of the entire trip. Food for Thought had great outdoor eating. Brody got this yummy chicken and waffles and I had my first of many lobster rolls. It was the perfect meal to kick off being in Maine.

After lunch, the kids couldn’t wait to get to the beach. This was definitely not like any beach I had been to before. For starters the beach area is huge. I loved the harder sand texture here more than the soft sand I’m used to in Florida. The temperature was another adjustment. The water temperature was in the low 70s. It took some time for the kids to get used to it, but it didn’t stop them from having fun. I actually enjoyed the cooler temperatures. You could sit outside all day and never get hot. There were so many people playing games on the beach and having picnics.

The sand/water is perfect to play in. I kept thinking how it would be a great beach to bring little ones to.

Enjoyed some yummy ice cream from the Scoop
Shack that evening after shopping at the boutiques downtown

The next morning we had a boat excursion scheduled. This was a great way to see the area from water, plus we got to see some seals and learn more about the area. There was a great smoothie and bagel shop right where we got on the boat.

This area of Ogunquit would also be a great place to stay. You would be close to walking trails, downtown shopping and dining, and beautiful views. You would just be a little farther from the beach.

I really enjoyed looking at all the cute restaurants and shops

We were told we had to eat at Barnacle Billy’s. The upstairs patio dining offered amazing views and the food was delicious!  Barnacle Billy’s is known to be a favorite of the Bush family.

After the boat ride we went walking on the great paved path that follows the rocky coastline. There were so many benches and scenic stops along the way. I would’ve been happy to walk this path multiple times a day.

On our last night we decided to drive the 20 minutes to Kennebunkport. As a lifelong fan of the Bush family, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get a glimpse of their famous estate as well as the town I had read about in so many books. The Bush family estate, Walker’s Point, was great to see. Just imagining what their views must be like from the house and sitting and listening to the powerful waves crashing on the rocks was a wonderful experience. The downtown area was also very quaint and charming.  One thing I would do differently next time is I would go to Kennebunkport for lunch rather than dinner. Many of their shops were closed and there weren’t near as many dining choices there.

Walker’s Point

On our way out of town we stopped at the Nubble Lighthouse in Maine. It’s situated on an island, so you can’t get closer to the lighthouse, but there is a gift shop on site.
