Newport, Rhode Island to Boston

As we started off toward Boston, which would be the next stop on our adventure, we decided to make a few stops along the way.  Our first detour was Newport, Rhode Island.  Newport is famous for their historic mansions.  We enjoyed driving by many of them! I really wanted to walk along the Cliff Walk path.  We found street parking and headed out to explore.

I could've spent so much more time exploring the Cliff Walk.  The kids enjoyed jumping around the rocks and I enjoyed the beautiful views.  It was really hot that morning, so we didn't stay too long!

After we left the Cliffs we ventured to the Downtown Newport.  This area is a great place for shopping and dining!  We enjoyed lunch on the patio while watching boats coming in and going out.  After lunch we did a little souvenir shopping before heading out.  Newport would be a great place to stay for a couple of nights.  There are so many things to do and a lot to explore!

We debated on whether or not we should stop at our next detour, but ultimately decided to go a little out of the way to see Plymouth Rock.  Even thought it was pretty underwhelming, I was glad that we had the chance to see it since it has such historical significance.

Even with all of our detours, we still made it to Boston mid-afternoon.  Boston looked a bit like a ghost town compared to the other places we had been.  Due to Covid, there were very few people out and about.  So many restaurants and businesses were closed and if they were open, there were very few diners there.
We stayed at the Loews Hotel in Copley Square.  This hotel is the former home to the Boston Police Headquarters.  The hotel was in a very convenient location to the Boston Commons and many restaurants.

Meg always appreciates a hotel with a fluffy white robe!

We enjoyed walking around Boston Commons, eating at Cheers (which had surprisingly good food), and exploring Esplanade and the beautiful sunset views!

The next day we set off to explore more.  I was so bummed that the Freedom Trail tours were closed because of Covid.  We decided to do a Duck Boat Tour instead.  This was a great way to see more of the city and learn about the important landmarks.

After the tour was over, we walked to Quincy Market for some lunch and shopping.  This was such a fun place to explore and the food choices were amazing!  We also picked of cannolis from Mike's Pastry.  There was no lined and they certainly lived up to the hype.  The next time I'm in Boston I will definitely eat at one of the Italian restaurants in the North End.  The food smelled amazing while we were walking around.

After resting for a bit back at the hotel, we decided to take the T to Cambridge and explore the area around Harvard.  It was very neat to see Harvard, but it was definitely very underwhelming and the area around Harvard is a bit run down.  The college campuses and campus corners in Oklahoma are much more beautiful!
Nothing makes Meg more nervous than riding on a subway, but the T was so nice that she kind of enjoyed it!

We then enjoyed a great dinner in Beacon Hill and exploring that neighborhood.

We ended the evening by renting bikes and riding up and down the water at Esplanade.  This was the highlight for the kids and something I really enjoyed too!
